Taryn + Carla = T:A:R:L:A

In 1944, 3 members of Orchesis (at that time a dance club at Iowa State University) combined their names (Barbara + Jean + Charlotte) to title what was to become an annual dance concert tradition in Ames, Iowa: Barjche (pronounced as "bar-shay").  Orchesis I now produces Barjche every February.

In keeping with tradition and making a new one, 1 faculty member (Taryn) and 1 student (Carla) came together to produce the 1st Annual T:A:R:L:A Dance for the Camera Festival in February, 2007. The first year was successful! Work was screened that arrived from Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York and Iowa. The screening took place in Fisher Theater at the Iowa State Center. Awards were given out based on a jury of 4 people.

This year we will screen the dances for the camera in Orchesis I's main location on the campus of Iowa State University, The Betty Toman Theater. The theater is named after a monumental influence on Orchesis I, Betty Toman. The space is commonly refered to as Forker Room 196 and it is where Orchesis I has weekly dance classes on Thursday nights.

The theater will be converted into a screening room with comfortable chairs, popcorn and soda for the audience. We hope to spread the love and understanding of dance made for the screen in a relaxed environment for all to share.

Barjche 2008

Barjche 2008 has come and gone quite quickly. Orchesis I performed 3 concerts in early February in Fisher Theater at the Iowa State Center. The show was a "dance through time" event that started in 1890 and travelled through the beginning of the 21st Century. This two-act performance was made possible by students, faculty, alumni and guest artists. Funding from parent donations and the Iowa State University's Government of the Student Body helped to produce the show.
